Retiring with a mortgage: should you do it?

 
Baby Boomers are more likely to have taken on debt and experienced financial insecurity than their parent’s generation. One major source of that debt lies in part due to the ease in obtaining loans for significantly more expensive houses and in making smaller down payments than previous generations. As of December 2011, 16 percent of loans of the 50+ population were underwater according to a research report released in 2012 by AARP, “Nightmare on Main Street: Older Americans and the Mortgage Market Crisis”.  Between 2007 and 2011, one and a half million Americans over the age of 50 lost their homes to foreclosure and three million are at risk of losing their homes according to AARP’s report.
