Many countries around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day.  The original Valentine’s Day was a liturgical celebration of one or more early saints named Valentius.  However, by the middle ages and probably largely due to Geoffrey Chaucer, Valentine’s Day became associated with a courtly love in which lovers expressed their devotion to one another with confections, flowers and greeting cards.

Having a purpose makes having a life possible

 
Rosa Finnegan’s birthday was yesterday.  She retired last year from her job at Vita Needle, a medical needle manufacturing plant.  “I always felt that I could work forever,” Finnegan said in an NPR interview.  “It made me feel like I was a worthwhile person.  I liked the companionship of people around me, and we’re all working.  I really feel like a dope.  I should never have stopped.  That was the sorriest day of my life.  Here I am, at the end of my life, in a nursing home.”

New stroke risks for women announced

The American Heart Association just released guidelines for preventing strokes in women. The guidelines look at things distinctly female in nature that increase the chance of a stroke and then provide recommendations for treating the problem. It’s not that women don’t share many of the same risk factors that men because we do. But women are often overachievers and this is just another one of those cases where that is true. So, if you are a woman and you’ve ever had any of the following, you have an increased risk of having a stroke.

It takes a village to combat dementia

 
Studies have indicated that socialization can play a significant protective role in the development of Alzheimer’s but along with that we also know that once an individual receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, socialization can help even as the disease progresses. The problem is that dementia is a scary diagnosis. It’s made even scarier for the family of the person with dementia and the person with dementia because a contributing member of society can suddenly be ostracized by the very people who could make dementia easier for them. That’s why in a Dementia 2012 conference, many European countries launched a program for creating dementia-friendly communities.
